With a wonderful view at the estuary of the Tagus river, Cais das Colunas was constructedafter the earthquake of 1755 by the architect Eugénio dos Santos. Its marble steps are thenoble entrance gate of Lisbon, where many heads of states and other important figures havelanded.
For example, Queen Elizabeth landed here in 1957.(I landed here just in 2017 (-: )
The name was given due to the two vertical pillars in the riverside area of Praça doComércio (the Commerce Square). These pillars have Masonic roots and symbolize the two
pillars of Solomon's temple: wisdom and devotion.
